Discussion Questions: Staley, "Computers, Visualization, and the Representation of History"
due June 3

1. Why is it that "serious history is written history"?

2. Think about cause and effect. Are they better described by words or images? Or both? Are cause and effect always linear?

3. Do you think it would be advantageous to use a digital 3D grid to portray cause and effect and change over time? Why or why not? What would it leave out?

4. Do you agree that "a historical work is a representation, not the thing represented"? How does technology make it possible for historians to include multiple perspectives in their representations?

5. If technology creates new venues for rigorous research and publication, should we change our professional standards to keep up with the technology?
